Persistent Cough

A persistent cough can be a sign of an underlying health issue, such as a respiratory infection, inflammation, allergies, or acid reflux, just to name a few.

Food for thought: Persistent coughs will go away when the underlying issue resolves! Commonly, most chronic coughs stem from asthma and smoking or even second-hand smoke. In recent years, however, many chronic coughs (lasting more than 6-8 weeks), have been thought to be linked with some cases of the covid virus or newer respiratory infections which lead to pneumonia.

If you have a cough that lasts more than a few weeks, it is important to have a medical provider listen to your lungs sounds and obtain a chest x-ray to get started in determining the cause and receiving appropriate treatment.

In the meantime:

Staying hydrated, using a humidifier, and avoiding irritants such as smoke and strong odors can help alleviate symptoms.

Over-the-counter medications : Consider Protonix or Pepcid which would help with  acid reflux or guaifenesin which will help to thin mucus in the lungs.

I love more natural remedies

To help with inflammation in the bronchioles in the lungs, I increase my Vitamin C intake significantly! Any colorful foods will be rich in this! In fact, first thing I drink before my morning coffee is drink a full glass of water (about 16 oz) with ¼ of a lemon squirted into it! The body is dry first thing in the morning and it’s important to hydrate first! Make a habit of it!

Foods that help thin the mucus: Warm liquid such as soup or tea. Honey helps with inflammation so I would add some to tea or coffee! Make sure it’s a local honey to get the best benefits! I love to eat spicey Indian foods to help with this as well!

Food for thought: If you’ve ventured down every pathway searching for a cause and nothing reveals a cause, then change your approach! For me, once life-threatening or treatable causes are ruled out, I change my mindset! I look at my life path and my environment. When we feel unsettled mentally and/or emotionally for a prolonged period, physical manifestations will arise. Something needs to change for the better! Sometimes it’s a change in employment, sometimes it’s a change in a relationship, and sometimes it's as simple as escaping to nature for an hour or two.  Pay attention to sleep and that you are getting enough of it! Sleep and nature significantly improve mindset and clarity, so make time for them both!

Additionally, consider the benefits of incorporating gentle physical activities like yoga or tai chi into your routine. These practices can improve lung function, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. Breathing exercises, such as diaphragmatic breathing, can also be beneficial in managing chronic cough by promoting relaxation and improving respiratory efficiency.

When addressing chronic coughs, it's essential to remain patient and persistent in finding the right combination of treatments and lifestyle changes. Everyone’s situation is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. Keep an open mind and be willing to explore various options until you find the solution that brings you relief.

Remember, chronic coughs can be frustrating and exhausting, but with the right approach, you can manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life. Stay proactive and take care of your body and mind. Your health is worth the effort!
